KarmSolar is a private Egyptian company established in 2011 dedicated to providing innovative off-grid solar energy solutions that are commercially viable and easy-to-use in the agricultural, industrial, and business sectors. Through developing unique approaches to each project, we develop systems that harness the power of the sun and replace diesel-powered processes and thereby producing energy that is affordable, stable, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
Meaning “a fruitful vine” in Arabic, the name for the company was inspired by the Karm Eco Lodge, a nature preserve in South Sinai and represents our commitment to sustainability. Our goal is to commercialize sustainability, enabling businesses to gain from an increase in productivity whilst benefiting from, and protecting, the environment.
The first company to install a high-capacity off-grid solar water pumping station in the Middle East and North Africa in April 2013.
International recognition for projects: HCT-Wharton Innovation Tournament in 2012, celebrating breakthroughs in innovation for sustainable global solutions.
Mohamed Ansary: Chairman, an alumnus of the Harvard Business School and the University of Massachusetts with over 20 years of experience in the energy sector. Ansary is currently Vice-Chairman-CEO and co-founder of Tri-Ocean Energy and Chairman of Dar Petroleum Company. Ansary is also a Board Member of: EKH, EHC, ETC & BKH.
Ahmed Zahran: CEO, holds a MSc. in Economics from the University of London. He has 10 years of experience in renewable energy and carbon trading working in Tunisia, the UK, and Egypt with Shell International and Tri Ocean Energy. At KarmSolar, Ahmed is responsible for financial projections and analysis, developing business strategies & work streams. His added value lies in leading business transformations and utilizing planning skills to manage business operations and line objectives.
Yumna Madi: Chief Business Development Officer, Yumna Madi, holds a M.A. in International Economics; Energy & Environmental Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS). She has over 5 years of experience in business development, contracting, market research and analysis working in Washington, D.C. and Cairo.
Davinder Sethi: Board Member, Sethi is currently the CFO and COO of KarmSolar’s partner company, WorldWater and Solar Technologies. He has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of iPing, Inc., and was a Director and Senior Advisor to Barclays de Zoete Wedd. In addition, Dr. Sethi spent seven years at Bell Laboratories in operations research and communications network planning and seven years in corporate finance at AT&T. Dr. Sethi holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Operations Research, Economics and Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a graduate of the Executive Management Program at Penn State.
Tamer Essawy: Commercial Director at Tri-Ocean Energy, Mr. Essawy has over 20 years of experience working with international corporations including Kvaemer Process in London and AGIP in Milan. Most recently he was GM for Contract and Agreements with Echem in Cairo. He has degrees in law and engineering from Cairo University as well as an MBA from the Arab Academy.
Member: Lamyaa is a practicing lawyer since 2004. She has received an LLB in Business Law (2004) from Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, LLB in Law (2004) from Cairo University and an LLM in International and European Business Law (2007) from Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne. Lamyaa practices law with a top tier International law firm in Egypt since 2005 and has extensive experience in the areas of Project Finance, Banking and Finance, Oil & Gas, Energy Projects and Environmental & Climate Change. She has been involved in several major award wining energy and petrochemical transactions and was ranked and praised in Chambers Global several times. She is featured in Who’s Who of Professionals 2013 edition.
Amr Badawy: Board Member, is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder. He has 10 years of experience in financial & business analysis in Banks & Stock Markets, with focus on Private Equity investments in the energy sector in the past 5 years. At KarmSolar, Amr is helping in economic modeling and business valuation.
Yasmin Hassan: Board Member, Hassan holds an MBA from INSEAD University with a concentration in management and finance. She holds a B.A. in Economics from Cairo University. Hassan is currently a partner at Beltone Financial. Prior to joining Beltone Financial, Hassan was a Vice President at EFG-Hermes Asset Management, where she spent six years managing funds and portfolios investing in the Middle East and Africa.
