1. Solar Water Pumping (Variable Speed Drive)

KarmSolar is the MENA region’s largest private off-grid solar integrator and developer of hardware and software for off-grid solar water pumping and irrigation systems. The initial concept and design won the HCT-Wharton Innovation Award in 2012.

System Description

The Off-Grid Solar Water Pumping (Variable Speed Drive) system powers high capacity submersible electric pumps with energy generated by a photovoltaic solar installation. Applicable on the majority of pumps commonly used in the agricultural sector, this system upgrades pumping systems allowing the replacement of diesel generators (However, if a diesel generator is needed to extend pump operation hours at non solar peak times, a Transfer Switch can be installed to utilize both energy sources.) The KarmSolar VSD solution allows stable pump operation at variable speeds, matching the changing available pv energy, therefore maximizing system efficiency due to low energy waste and maximum pump output.

2. Hybrid Pumping to Irrigation

System Description

The Hybrid Water Pumping & Irrigation System allows a pump to be run with two energy sources simultaneously (solar photovoltaics and diesel generators), a game-changing feature enabled by the KarmSolar Hybrid Drive Controller’s unique algorithm. The level of control gained with the dual use of these energy sources allows the maintenance of the maximum constant pumping pressure required to pump water directly from a well to Drip Irrigation and Central Pivot Irrigation networks. Due to the system’s highly efficient use of the solar component, the diesel generator can be switched off during peak hours with a seamless transition.

With broader application than purely solar-powered water pumps, the hybrid solution offers greater options for pumping and irrigation, enabling the following infrastructures to be run 24 hours a day:

i) pumping into water storage
ii) direct pumping from a well into irrigation networks
iii) direct pumping from storage into irrigation networks
